Medicare Guidelines:
Allow a prosthesis to be replaced every
5 years, or as medically needed, as the plastic will become porous
and begin to promote infection. This porosity is not always obvious
to the naked eye. Medicare does allow
the prosthesis to be replaced sooner if the physician recognizes
anatomical changes to the socket or lid surgery causing the prosthesis
to be ill-fitting. The prosthesis should be polished 1 to 2 times
per year and reduction and enlargements as deemed necessary.
